New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Monday he plans to attend an annual policy meeting. conference in Puerto Rico The day after Election Day, potential rivals to the incumbent Democratic mayor will also be there to lobby for support in 2025.

At his weekly news conference, Adams, who supported Vice President Harris for president and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, was asked who he was voting for and whether he planned to attend the SOMOS conference.

“I always look forward to going to SOMOS. I think I missed a few years. I plan to go, I’m not 100% sure. I would love to go,” said Adams said. “It’s a good time to meet people in Puerto Rico. So I plan to go.”

“But, you know, I have a lot of things to do in the city,” the mayor added a day before the November 5 elections. “And if I can get a lot done before next week, then I’ll definitely go. But I’m not going to stay long, no matter what. I’ve made it clear who I support, and who I support, that’s is who I’m voting for. It’s very clear. I was a delegate in Chicago.

Last week, Adams raised eyebrows after he repeatedly refused to criticize former President Trump, refusing to say when he last spoke with the Republican nominee or whether he was seeking a pardon if Trump was re-elected.

Trump suggested that the DOJ indicted Adams for criticizing the federal government’s response to the migrant crisis. Trump also mentioned Adams by name during his rally at Madison Square Garden, thanking the Democratic mayor for saying Trump shouldn’t be comparedto the German dilator Adolf Hitler or be called a “fascist”.

The annual SOMOS conference begins Wednesday in San Juan. Adams attended in 2021 and 2022. He didn’t go last year.

Days before the conference was scheduled to begin in 2023, the FBI seized Adams’ cellphone as part of a federal corruption investigation.

The Department of Justice indicted Adams in September on corruption, campaign finance and conspiracy crimes.

The indictment accuses Adams of accepting flight upgrades and other luxury travel benefits worth $100,000, as well as illegal campaign contributions from a Turkish official and other foreign nationals seeking to buy his influence. In exchange, prosecutors say, Adams did favors for the Turkish government, including pressuring firefighters in 2021 to approve the opening of a consulate they deemed unsafe.

Adams was in a different elected position at the time, Brooklyn borough president, but by then it was clear he would become mayor.

Adams has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His federal trial will begin next April, a judge ruled Friday, in the heart of his promised re-election campaign.

The SOMOS conference will provide an opportunity for all of Adams’ potential primary challengers to canvass for support in Puerto Rico ahead of the 2025 mayoral election, City & State New York reported.

Mayoral candidates have already held their first candidate forum in the Bronx on the first day of early voting, according to the outlet. New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, City Comptroller Brad Lander, State Senators Jessica Ramos and Zellnor Myrie, Former City Comptroller Scott Stringer and Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani were among the participants in this meeting.

Rumors suggest that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will run for mayor. It is unknown if he will participate in SOMOS.

U.S. District Judge Dale E. Ho set the mayor’s trial date for Friday, as Adams returned to Manhattan federal court for a hearing on his bid to eliminate a key charge in the looming indictment his political future.

Ho expressed confidence that the April 21, 2025 date will be met, “assuming nothing unexpected happens.” At the same time, prosecutors said they still haven’t been able to uncover a potentially crucial piece of evidence: Adams’ personal cellphone. According to his indictment, Adams changed his password just before giving the phone to authorities, then claimed he forgot it.

Adams’ lawyers are fighting to dismiss a corruption charge, one of five counts against the Democrat in his first term.

They argued that the charge does not meet the felony threshold recently reduced by the U.S. Supreme Court and should not apply to Adams because it involves allegations dating back to before he became mayor.
