Winnipeg Jets get first look at Utah hockey club

For the first time this season, the Winnipeg Jets have the chance to take a look at Utah’s newest hockey club.

Although the team name and location are new, the majority of players are not as they are from the now-defunct Arizona Coyotes.

They still sit in the Central Division and the Jets are familiar with the type of hockey they play.

“They have a lot of young talent, like you said. A lot of guys that can make a lot of plays. So we have to be careful with that, stick to our game, play a solid defensive game and get our offense from there, because there’s a lot of offensive weapons on the other side,” Jets forward Cole Perfetti said.

Utah has struggled as of late, losing five of its last six games. But that doesn’t mean Winnipeg plans to take them lightly.

“Looking at their stats and their analytics, the defensive part of their game is really good. This has been much better, and that’s an area where they don’t give you much, so you have to work for it,” said head coach Scott Arniel. “That’s going to mean we’re going to have to work to get our space and get on the ice. It’s not going to be easy once we get there.”

Since losing their season opener last week to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Jets have won three straight, outscoring their opponents 19-8 in the process.

They also lead the league in goal differential with a plus-26 differential, which is 10 better than the nearest team.

Forward Kyle Connor said the focus was on turning defense into offense.

“This didn’t happen overnight. This is something that we’ve been working on for years now. And, you know, you can tell this core that’s together, every year we meet with management, we meet, it’s ‘How can we get better That’s our main goal We have to improve as a group, it’s in this group that we know we have a champion team in this group. ” Connor said.

Some of the offensive success has been seen on the power play. Both units found the net as the team scored 15 total goals with the extra skater, leading the league with a 44.1 percent conversion rate.

Perfetti is tied for the team lead with five power play points this season.

“We’re both successful, and if one unit doesn’t score, the other unit does. I think we’ve seen it in several games where, if our unit doesn’t score, the first unit will come out and take over .a big problem for us and vice versa,” Perfetti said.

Arniel said the two units have different styles when on the ice, which keeps shorthanded players guessing what’s going to happen.

“It gives us another kind of two-edged sword,” Arniel said. “I like the fact though that whoever starts a power play, if they haven’t done their job in a minute, they go away, which is great, and it gives that second unit a chance to come out. “

The Jets will try to make it four straight wins on Tuesday. Puck drop at the Canada Life Center will take place at 7 p.m.
