JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson Lower School held a mock election Tuesday.

This event was designed to engage students in the electoral process and help them understand the importance of voting and civic participation. The school also made it a relevant activity for students by allowing the “candidates” to be two non-profit organizations that elementary students will vote between to support and serve their Christmas service project.

The upperclassmen named the Ronald McDonald House and the Star Center. Grades 4 and 5 also presented campaign videos, posters and more to K-3 students. Students discovered the electoral process, the importance of voting and the responsibilities of citizens and candidates. They also filled out voter registration cards.

“Students had to fill out these forms with their first and last name, their grade, their school, and then they had to sign. There was also a little box so they could draw a picture of themselves to show who they are and when they came to vote they were asked for their name to match their voter registration card , and then they were escorted on stage to vote,” said 4th grade teacher Anna English.

On Tuesday, students voted like a real election. After voting, they received an “I Voted” sticker designed by a fellow student.
