Virginia votes to expand tax exemptions for surviving spouses of soldiers killed in the line of duty

FAIRFAX, Virginia.Virginians have agreed to a proposal to expand tax exemptions for surviving spouses of soldiers who die in the line of duty.

According to the Virginia Department of Elections, the state Constitution currently allows the General Assembly to exempt from taxation the primary residence of the surviving spouse of any soldier determined to have been killed in action – or killed in action.

The “yes” vote on the proposed constitutional amendment means an expansion of the current tax exemption so that it is also available to all surviving spouses of soldiers who, according to the Department of Defense, died in the line of duty. functions – a broader definition. this includes any death occurring while a service member is carrying out their official duties.
