We will not see changes to Florida’s marijuana or abortion laws.

Amendments 3 and 4 failed to garner sufficient support.

“We don’t have recreational marijuana and we don’t have women’s right to choose until they are viable,” said Aubrey Jewett, a professor at the University of Central Florida. “It just didn’t work.”

The campaigns for and against these amendments spent a lot of money and time fighting for each side. Jewett explained why he thought these amendments failed.

“The Republicans now have a big lead of a million voters in voter registration, Governor De Santis led a very vigorous and strong effort to defeat these amendments, and that Florida requires 60%, and here is why these two didn’t make it,” Jewett said.

Jewett said he doesn’t think this will be the last time we see these amendments.

“I think we might see some variations in the future and we’ll see what the proponents of these amendments have learned,” Jewett said.

Professor Vincent Adejumo of the University of Florida is not so confident.

“It will take outside groups that have considerable financial means, that can connect with the politicians here and also with the base to get the vote back on the ballot,” Adejumo said.

Adejumo said he thinks the Florida Democratic Party needs to rebuke its strategy to reach more voters in the state in order to see a shift to the left.
