How the Springboks can return to number 1

The Springboks return to action against Scotland as they begin their end-of-year tour of the United Kingdom.

The world rugby rankings will be the talking point of November’s end-of-year tour, with the world’s top three teams all battling to finish the 2024 season as the number one team in the world.

Furthermore, The Springboks will be looking to reclaim this place this weekend. Here’s how they can get back to the top of the World rankings.

HOW THE SPRINGBOKS CAN RETURN TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD RANKINGS

Heading into this weekend’s Test matches, Ireland, South Africa and New Zealand all have a chance to become the top-ranked team in the world.

For the Springboks, a win or draw against Scotland will be enough to return to the top IF Ireland LOSE to the All Blacks.

Meanwhile, if Ireland are victorious over the All Blacks, they will retain top spot. Regardless of the Springboks’ result – or margin of victory.

Finally, New Zealand can end the weekend in first position if they beat Ireland and the Springboks lose twice to Scotland at Murreyfield.

FIRST YEAR-END TOUR AS WORLD CHAMPIONS

This is the Springboks’ first end-of-year tour since their Bok-to-Bok visit to France in 2023.

Thus, the world champions will want to assert their authority over the world by displaying their domination in the Northern Hemisphere. The Springboks favor Scotland in a rematch of their bruising battle in the group stages of last year’s Rugby World Cup. Afterwards, they will travel to Twickenham to face England in a rematch of this dramatic RWC 2023 semi-final. Finally, the Springboks close their tour against Wales in what will be their last match of a huge year for South African rugby.

The Springboks won the Rugby Championship, completed the double against the All Blacks and also won the Nelson Mandela Plate and Freedom Cup in what was another huge year for SA Rugby.
