Peter Obi issues statement on ‘painful’ death of Chief of Army Staff Lagbaja

FCT, AbujaPeter Obithe presidential candidate of Labor Party (LP) during the 2023 elections, sent a message of condolences to the family, loved ones and colleagues of the late chief of army staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.

Obi, who is a former governor of Anambra Statedescribed Lagbaja’s death as a “painful loss.”

In a statement he personally signed, obtained by Legitime.ngthe LP leader sympathized with the Nigerian government; Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa; Acting Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; other service chiefs, senior officers of the armed forces and all other military officers and men.

Obi said:

“On behalf of my family and the Obidient family, I extend my sincere condolences to the entire Lagbaja family, the Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Army for this painful loss, which has indeed created a great void within its family and our dear nation.

“May God Almighty, who has called him home at this time, forgive him his sins, grant him eternal rest and grant his family, the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian government and all of us the courage to bear his sad and irreplaceable loss.

Lagbaja died after battling an undisclosed illness. He was 56 years old.

He was appointed COAS by the President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023.

On October 20, the army rumors dismissed Lagbaja had died, adding that the army chief was undergoing medical treatment abroad.

Subsequently, Tinubu named Olufemi Oluyede as Acting COAS.

Former Admiral Ibrahim, Chief of Defense Staff, Loses His Wife

Earlier, Legitime.ng reported the death of Mrs. Aminat Dupe Ibrahim, wife of former Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim.

Family sources revealed that Aminat died in Abuja, on the night of Tuesday, November 5, following a brief illness.

His funeral prayers are expected to take place at the National Mosque, Abuja, after which his remains will be buried according to Islamic rites.
