New BC cabinet to be sworn in on November 18 after this week’s judicial recounts

VICTORIA — British Columbia’s new cabinet is expected to be sworn in on Nov. 18, a month after the provincial election that gave Premier David Eby’s NDP the slimmest of majorities, pending a recount.

VICTORIA — British Columbia’s new cabinet is expected to be sworn in on Nov. 18, a month after the provincial election that gave Premier David Eby’s NDP the slimmest of majorities, pending a recount.

A release from Eby’s office said the swearing-in dates for cabinet and members of the legislature were set based on judicial recounts in three ridings and information provided by Elections BC.

Eby says judicial recounts taking place Thursday and Friday will ensure every vote is counted.

After these stories, he says British Columbians want to see “urgent action” on priorities like affordability and housing, health care and building a strong economy.

Eby says the first step is to swear in the new cabinet at a ceremony in Victoria, where it will present its recommendations to the lieutenant governor. Janet Austin.

The statement said a transition team co-chaired by Eby’s special advisor on Indigenous reconciliation, Doug White, and Shannon Salter, deputy minister to the Prime Minister and head of the public service, will make recommendations on the selection of ministers and the formation of ministries in the new government.

Newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly should be sworn in and formally invited to take their seats before the cabinet swearing-in, it says.

MPs from the Opposition caucus and the BC Green Party are expected to be sworn in on November 12, while MPs from the government caucus will be sworn in the following day.
