What the Raiders need to fix during the bye week

The Las Vegas Raiders enter their bye week at 2-7, tied for the worst record in the league.

The Raiders hired coach Antonio Pierce as full-time head coach because of his success in 2023 as an interim and the way he dealt with players and fans. He hasn’t found that magic again this season, and things seem much worse than when he was interim.

Many in Raider Nation are relieved that the Raiders don’t have to play a game this week. The lack of offensive consistency and occasional defensive struggles did not make Sundays enjoyable for Silver and Black fans.

Pierce and the Raiders will not receive mail this season. They will not give up this year and will look to do what it takes to turn things around.

But what does this imply?

It starts with fixing the offense. The Raiders rank 29th in the league in total offense, 19th in passing offense, last in rushing offense and 26th in scoring offense. The Raiders have fallen behind in games because they can’t maintain drives or find the end zone.

That’s why the team fired Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator. The team lacked explosiveness and efficiency on the offensive side of the ball. The Raiders brought in former coach and highly respected offensive mind Norv Turner to help turn things around.

How are the Raiders improving offensively? It starts with a more consistent running game. The Raiders struggled to move the ball, with Zamir White and Alexander Mattison making the majority of the carries.

Turner could potentially help his son, Scott, who is also an offensive coach, and the Raiders’ offense could turn things around. During his coaching career, he generated high-powered attacks.

The Raiders also need to think about their defense. They rank among the worst defenses in the NFL, allowing nearly 28 points per game, which ranks them 29th in the league.

The key to solving this problem is forcing more turnovers. The Raiders have five takeaways this season, ranking dead last in the NFL. Giving the offense a short field gives them more opportunities to score, but they haven’t done that at all this season.

This Raiders season isn’t over yet, but it would take a lot to even remotely change things. However, the formula exists to make things better.
