Rain warning for BC’s north coast, power still out for thousands on south coast

Environment Canada is warning of heavy rain on British Columbia’s north coast, while several thousand BC Hydro customers remain without power on the south coast after strong winds Monday.

The weather bureau says rainfall totals of between 110 and 130 millimeters are expected on the north coast, including Prince Rupert.

It says inland areas will see between 70 and 110 millimeters of rain before the showers ease.

The warning says rain will decrease later Wednesday in Stewart, but will continue overnight in Terrace and Kitimat, easing Thursday morning.

On the South Coast, power was restored to the vast majority of BC Hydro’s 290,000 customers who were in the dark at one point Monday as strong winds battered coastal areas and parts of the central interior .

The Crown utility says about 3,500 customers remain without power on the South Coast, mainly in Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast, although it expects lights to be restored for the most later Wednesday.

It says additional crews have been called in to help with repair efforts in Sechelt and West Vancouver, as well as neighboring Gambier and Keats Islands.

An update on the BC Hydro website says the work includes clearing trees and vegetation, as well as repairing broken poles and power lines.
