The five NDP MPs from Burnaby who won seats on October 19 will officially take their elected places on November 18.

This is when the last government will be sworn in to power, according to a press release from the province today, November 6.

Incumbents Anne Kang (Burnaby Centre), Raj Chouhan (Burnaby-New Westminster) and Janet Routledge (Burnaby North) are not new to this occasion.

Reah Arora (Burnaby East) and Paul Choi (Burnaby South-Metrotown) will attend the swearing-in ceremony for the first time.

Premier David Eby will present his office’s recommendations to British Columbia Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin before Monday’s meeting, meaning elected officials will also find out whether they will take the helm of a ministerial portfolio .

Kang has previously been in charge of the portfolio, having been appointed Minister of Citizen Services from January 2020 to November 2020.

She was appointed Minister of Higher Education, Skills and Training from November 26 to December 7, 2022.

She was Minister of Municipal Affairs during her last mandate.

Before the elections, Raj Chouhan was the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2013 to 2017.

He previously served as assistant vice president from 2017 to 2020.

While the BC NDP was in opposition, Chouhan was the critic for mental health as well as human rights, immigration, multiculturalism and labor.
