Hilarious and heartwarming moments from the 2024 New York City Marathon

Social media feeds were full of content from the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday. While the creative signs held up by fans were probably the funniest we’ve seen, several other hilarious and wholesome moments stood out even more.

Here are our four favorite moments from this year’s race through the Big Apple.

1. This dog who ran his fourth marathon

Florida marathon star, an Australian shepherd named Sydney the Australian Service, sported her own green sunglasses, neon orange vest and running shoes while competing in her fourth marathon. She ran alongside her owner, Shirley Rincon; together, while running a sub-eight hour marathon (7:58:20).

Videos posted by shocked spectators showed Sydney staying hydrated at water stations and strutting across the finish line. On her personal TikTok account, the pup revealed that she was training for these endurance events by running on the treadmill.

2. John’s fan club

This group picked a random (but very common) name – John – and waved, chanting “John” to passing groups of runners, hoping one of them would be named John. With nearly 500 Johns registered for the event, the John Fan Club received many enthusiastic responses from race participants as each John saw the group of strangers cheering them on.

3. This puppy who spreads “zoomies”

@beckhamthegolden Best. boops. Never. Congratulations to the New York marathoners!! You did it #boop #nycmarathon #nycmarathon2024 #nyc #newyorkcity ♬ Everyone wants to rule the world X Electric Love – Darcy Stokes

Beckham the Golda dog with 13,000 followers on Instagram, showed up to cheer with a sign reading “Boop for Zooms,” encouraging runners to tap his nose to get a burst of energy that will propel them throughout their race.

The golden retriever has been a loyal supporter of the New York City Marathon since 2021, showing up to offer pets and high fives to runners to encourage them mid-race. In 2021, he sat with a high that said “Free high fives”, and in 2022 his sign read “Pet Crew”, replacing the pit crew support team that would be seen in the car racing.

4. This runner is having a little too much fun

Justine Huang from Los Angeles had a little buzz to help him finish his race; the 26-year-old drank a cup of Prosecco mid-race, provided by a cheering team who had set up their own “refreshment” station along the course.

Videos captured by her friends showed Huang later in the race, happily exclaiming that she was drunk. The runner still managed to cross the finish line in 5:39:19.
