Field hockey 17th-ranked King Philip stuns No. 1 Lincoln-Sudbury

“But then to be two goals ahead of them in the fourth quarter, it was a huge sigh of relief.”

Wilder attributed the victory to strong senior leadership, led by captains Abby MacDonald, Mackenzie McDevitt and Addison Lewis.

MacDonald set the tone early with an unassisted goal.

But for the rest of the game, the Warriors (13-6-1) held strong on defense to keep Lincoln-Sudbury from scoring until the fourth quarter.

Lewis held her own in the backfield and led the defense alongside junior goalkeeper Lauren Griffin (14 saves).

“From all the practices and team bonding events, our team has (become) a unit,” Lewis said.

“We win together, we lose together and I think we are very unselfish players.”

There was excitement on the bench after Makenzie McDevitt scored the team’s second goal with seven minutes left in regulation off an assist from sophomore Tayla McDuff.

A minute later, LS benefited from a green card for their only goal.

But, upon his return, the Warriors regained their domination to close the match with a heavy surprise.

Next up was a quarterfinal matchup Saturday at No. 9 Wellesley, which ousted No. 8 Feehan in double overtime.

“I told them, you have the right to celebrate this victory, but we’re back tomorrow,” Wilder said. “(Wellesley) is also coming off an incredible win, so we’re both coming in with this great energy.”
