Sabah dive resort fined RM15,000 for operating tourist boat without license

KOTA KINABALU: A diving center in Semporna has been fined RM15,000 by a Tawau Magistrate’s Court for using an unlicensed boat to transport guests.

Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum imposed the fine on Thursday (Nov 7) after a representative of the company pleaded guilty to charges under Section 20 (1) of the Tourism Industry Act 1992, punishable under section 20 (2) of the same law.

The court was told that the resort, despite being a licensed tourism operator, had failed to obtain the necessary license from the Sabah Ports Department for the boat.

Assistant public prosecutors Siti Ruvinna Mohd Rawi and Siti Zulaikha Mahadi stressed the importance of complying with licensing regulations to ensure the safety of Sabah’s tourism sector.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture recently stated that violations of this law are considered criminal offenses.

He also said investigations were underway to determine whether other operators might be breaking the law, marking a broader effort to enforce tourism standards and maintain visitor safety across Sabah.
