Bruins looking for final playoff spot 9-5A-DI

The task is simple for the West Brook Bruins in Week 11: win or go home.

“It’s the playoffs a week early for us,” West Brook head football coach Chuck Langston said. “For us, it’s the playoffs a week early. We have to win the game. We have to be great.”

It’s a tight race for the final playoff spot in District 9-5A-DI, with West Brook having a chance for the first time in four years.

“Just working on the field: blood, sweat, tears, just to get to this point,” sophomore quarterback Tam Anderson said.

The Bruins are 2-3 in district and a win against Barbers Hill would see the Bruins win the head-to-head tiebreaker.

“It’s going to be a huge challenge for us, but I think our guys are up to it,” Langston said. “We’re going to have to execute and play really well for four quarters.”

Barbers Hill is a team that likes to run the ball and push the tempo, so the West Brook Bruins are focusing on speed in this game, so they can see the results on the scoreboard and see their dreams come true – – those for whom they have worked since last November.

“I’m like a 99, he’s like an 87 and he looks like an 82,” senior linebacker Jarvis Bassett said. “My young people and I will manage the affairs there.”

These experienced linebackers plan to protect a young, hungry quarterback ready to lead the charge.

“I trust these guys every day I come here, and I just hope they put that trust in me,” Anderson said. “When they start to go down and I try to build them back up, they just listen.”

Five schools are still eligible, only four playoff tickets, all through Friday night.

“We’re going to the playoffs,” Bassett and a few other linebackers said. “We said it here first.”

Kickoff at Mt. Belvieu is set for 7 p.m.
