The decision comes after a violent attack

What is the story

Amid security concerns, the Indian consulate in Toronto canceled a number of upcoming consular camps across Canada.

The Indian Consulate General in Toronto announced the cancellations after local security agencies said they could not provide security at the events.

The move follows a violent attack on a Hindu temple near Toronto, allegedly carried out by pro-Khalistani groups this week.

The attack, which targeted women and children, drew widespread condemnation from Indian and Canadian leaders.

Consulate responds to security agencies’ failure to guarantee security

The Indian High Commission had termed the incident as a targeted act by “anti-Indian” elements.

The consulate said: “In view of the inability of security agencies to provide minimal protection to the organizers of the community camps, the consulate has decided to cancel some of the planned consular camps.”

This attack joins a series of similar incidents in recent years. Previously, a Hindu temple in Windsor was defaced with anti-Indian graffiti. Before that, the Mississauga and Brampton temples were also targeted.

Canadian Hindu Foundation shares footage of alleged attacks

The Canadian Hindu Foundation released videos of the alleged attacks by pro-Khalistani groups, sparking widespread outrage.

More than a thousand Canadian Hindus protested outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, demanding action from Canadian leaders and law enforcement against these groups.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi condemned the attack, saying: “I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada.”

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau condemns violence, thanks police

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the violence, saying “every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely.”

He thanked Peel Regional Police for their quick response.

This incident further strained relations between India and Canada, which were already strained over Canada’s allegations that India was involved in the assassination of Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an accusation that the India dismissed it as “absurd” and “baseless”.
