FBI foils New Yorker’s ‘evil plan’ to wage jihad

FBI agents arrested a New York man to board a flight from New York to the Middle East, where he would join the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) to wage jihad, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The DOJ said in a press release that Syed Aman, a U.S. citizen and resident of Nassau County, New York, was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS.

Aman was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, while attempting to board a flight to Doha, Qatar. The DOJ said Aman planned to leave for Syria starting in Qatar to join ISIS.

“As has been alleged, Aman was determined in his attempts to travel to the Middle East to join ISIS and, fortunately, his evil plan to wage jihad was thwarted,” said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace. “My office will continue to identify and prosecute potential terrorists like the defendant before they can harm individuals at home or abroad in the name of ISIS.”

In a complaint filed Wednesday in Brooklyn federal court, Aman is accused of expressing support for ISIS on an online forum of the group between 2023 and 2024. During the same period, Aman allegedly sent messages money to an individual he believed to be a member of ISIS. operational, to support Islamic State efforts in Syria. He also reportedly planned to travel to Syria to engage in jihad, or holy war, alongside ISIS.

More recently, Aman was in contact with a confidential human source (CHS) from early October 2024, as part of his plan to join ISIS.

In his communications with CHS, Aman reportedly said that waging war in the name of ISIS and traveling to ISIS-controlled territory were “the most important things, more than anything else right now.” .

On social media, Aman allegedly displayed his desire to “kill Americans” and wrote in a notebook that he would become a martyr for ISIS.

In late October, Aman tried to book flights to the Middle East, but the credit card company blocked his purchases.

However, on a third attempt, Aman managed to book a flight from JFK to Bangladesh via Doha, Qatar.

He reportedly told CHS that he planned to get off his flight in Qatar and purchase a flight from Qatar to Turkey, from where he would cross into Syria to join ISIS.

On Tuesday, Aman went to JFK Airport to catch a flight to Qatar. After checking in and going through airport security, he attempted to board his flight and was arrested by the FBI.
