Burnaby ranks in top five, according to new data from Orkin Canada at the provincial level And nationwide of the most “shabby” towns.

Burnaby ranked fourth in Canada and third in British Columbia in terms of the number of rat and mouse treatments. Orkin Canada played from August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024

The company says the ranking included residential and commercial treatments.

Orkin Canada recommends that people take the following steps to prevent rodents from targeting their property:

• Eliminate the refuge: Clear clutter indoors and outdoors, cut back overgrown vegetation and keep grass short.
• Cut off water sources: Eliminate moisture by clearing clogged gutters and repairing leaking pipes or faucets both indoors and outdoors.
• Remove food sources: Clean up fallen fruits or vegetables in the yard, store waste in rodent-proof trash cans and avoid overflows
• Seal Entry Points: Fill gaps larger than 1/4 inch with rodent-proof materials and install weatherstripping on exterior doors to block entry points.
