New York Knicks fall to Atlanta Hawks amid No. 1 pick breakout

The New York Knicks witnessed some early history, but it’s safe to say they didn’t enjoy it.

Zaccarie Risacher’s childhood career night ended the Knicks’ first big road trip of the season on a sour note, as New York lost a 121-116 decision to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night at State Farm Arena .

Risacher, the top pick in the most recent draft, entered Wednesday’s race averaging 9.4 points in his first eight professional performances, but broke away for a team-high 31 points en route towards victory.

With most of that total built on a 6-of-10 effort from three-point range, Risacher became the fifth rookie to drop at least six from deep against the Knicks. Lauri Markkanen holds the record with eight while Mike Miller, Landry Shamet and Coby White have also done so.

Despite trailing for most of Wednesday’s game, the Knicks (3-4) looked in good shape when Karl-Anthony Towns hit a three-pointer to score what became the last of his team’s best 34 . in hand, the Knicks had added momentum when they pulled off a reversal via a challenge when Towns was charged with bouncing a block out of bounds.

But from there, Atlanta (4-5) went on a 16-6 run to close the game: Clint Capela, who dominated the Knicks in the paint all night, played the hero by making the free throws that completed Atlanta’s mini-comeback. at 1:09 before hitting an emphatic dunk that pushed the lead to three 23 seconds later.

With the loss, the Knicks not only lost the second half of a four-game road trip after wins at Miami and Detroit, but also lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

The Knicks will return home briefly Friday night when they take on the Milwaukee Bucks at Madison Square Garden (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG).
