Vehicle hits Winnipeg school – Brandon Sun

WINNIPEG — Holy Cross School has canceled classes after a motorist drove into the Norwood-area elementary building shortly after being dismissed Tuesday.

City police and school staff confirmed that the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon and that no students or employees were injured.

“A building is a building. Things can be fixed,” Director Catherine Walker said Wednesday afternoon.

“Not a hair was out of place. No humans were hurt, that’s all that matters to me.

Teachers went to work Wednesday to debrief and develop a plan to return to teaching.

The Winnipeg Police Service said emergency responders were called to the scene after 3 p.m. Tuesday and a subsequent investigation was completed.

Const. Dani McKinnon, public information officer, said no charges had been filed and there was no sign of criminal intent. No one was injured, McKinnon said.

It was a “miracle” that the affected classroom was empty, said one employee who asked that his identity remain anonymous.

“Our school community is safe. I feel truly blessed,” the staffer said via text message.

The K-8 building, located at 300 Dubuc Street, is a member of Manitoba Catholic Schools. The latest enrollment data shows there were 371 students enrolled at the school in 2023-2024.

Walker said classes are expected to resume today. Displaced second-graders will learn in the cafeteria indefinitely, the school principal said, adding that she was grateful to her “incredible team” who came together after the incident.

A support services teacher is standing by to help those affected by the situation, Walker said.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
