India-Canada conflict: India cancels consular camps in Toronto as security agencies ‘unable to provide minimum security’

Amid ongoing diplomatic tensions, the Indian consulate in Canada has canceled consular camps planned to issue life certificates to applicants.

The Indian Consulate in Canada canceled the camps after security agencies reported their “failure to provide minimal security protection” to the camp organizers, the Indian Consulate General in Toronto said on November 7.

The move comes just days after a series of violent attacks by Khalistani extremists at consular camps in Brampton, Surrey and Vancouver. The latest attack took place in Brampton on November 3 during regular consular work to issue local life certificates to Indian and Canadian applicants.

The life certificate is a crucial document to ensure the maintenance of your pension.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has blamed “anti-Indian elements” for the violence outside the consular camp co-hosted with the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton.

Several members of the Indian Sikh diaspora were present in the hall inside the Hindu Sabha Mandir camp in Brampton when the attack took place outside by Khalistan extremists, who were seen carrying flags of Khalistan.

Attempts had already been made to disrupt similar camps held in Vancouver and Surrey on November 2.

“It is deeply disappointing to see such disruptions allowed for routine consular work organized by our consulates with the utmost cooperation of local co-organizers. We also remain very concerned about the safety of candidates, particularly Indian nationals, at whose request such events are organized in the first place. Despite these efforts by anti-Indian elements, our consulate was able to issue more than 1000 life certificates to Indian and Canadian candidates…” the High Commission had declared.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had denounced the “deliberate attack” outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir and called on the Trudeau government to provide justice. “I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to guarantee justice and uphold the rule of law,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar called the attack “deeply worrying”.

Speaking in the House of Commons at the Canadian Parliament on November 6, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the communities behind the violence were neither the Sikh nor the Hindu community of Canada, failing to emphasize the the involvement of Khalistan separatists in the attacks. .
