Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin Pledges to Work With Trump, Calls for Less Division

MADISON, Wis. — Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin pledged in her re-election speech Thursday to work with President-elect Donald Trump when possible, but she also vowed to fight him to protect the nation’s health law. health care and the right to abortion.

Baldwin was narrowly re-elected to a third term against Trump-backed Republican businessman Eric Hovde. Hovde has yet to concede a goal in a race where the margin is so close it could require a recount.

“We deserve a politics with less vitriol, less division, less hatred and less lies. Actually, no lies,” Baldwin told a room of supporters at a steamfitters union training center.

Baldwin beat Hovde by just under 29,000 votes, a margin of 0.9 percent, based on unofficial results. State law allows losers within one percentage point of the winner to request a recount, but Hovde has not yet said whether he would do so.

Hovde’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Hovde would have to pay for the recount and he would have to request it within three days after the final county’s vote count was completed. These are expected by November 19, but counties could complete them sooner.

Baldwin’s victory was a bright spot for Democrats in an otherwise bleak election that saw Trump win Wisconsin on his way back to the White House. Baldwin outperformed Vice President Kamala Harris in Wisconsin, winning by just under a point, roughly Trump’s margin of victory over Harris in the state.

“I recognize that the people of Wisconsin chose Donald Trump and I respect their choice,” Baldwin said. “You know I will always fight for Wisconsin, and that means working with President Trump to get it done and standing up to him when he does. We don’t have our best interests at heart.

Baldwin, in a nod to Wisconsin’s deeply divided politics, released an ad during the campaign referencing his Buy American bill that Trump signed into law.

Baldwin, who has never lost an election, attributed his third Senate victory to his constant travel across the state and his contact with voters of all types. This year, she gained the support of the conservative Wisconsin Farm Bureau, marking the first time the group supported a Democrat in a statewide race in more than 20 years.

“We did everything, everywhere, at the same time,” Baldwin said in explaining his victory. “I have traveled to red, blue, purple, rural, suburban and urban areas of our state. I listened to people. I really listened to people and I live up to them. And, in turn, the people of Wisconsin showed up for me. And I am so grateful.
