New CEO of the Burnaby Board of Trade outlines his vision for a new era of business success

Whether it’s her ability to build bridges, connect communities, or ensure business needs are always met, it’s not out of the realm of possibility to suggest that Angie Whitfield worked as a civil engineer in a lifetime anterior.

And it is precisely these innate engineering qualities that Whitfield brings to his new position as CEO of Burnaby Chamber of Commerceposition she has held since mid-August.

“It’s been fantastic so far – it’s truly a dream job for me,” says Whitfield. “Being able to support businesses and bring them together to be more prosperous is an idea that I love. »

Whitfield’s new position follows 20 years of experience in major event planning and business advocacy roles, where she most recently worked for the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce and Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Association. She studied leisure management and managed large festivals – the Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest, for example – for years before landing her current position.

It is through these experiences that Whitfield gained a deep understanding of what motivates individuals and businesses to contribute to the well-being of entire communities. And with extensive experience in team sports – both as a participant and coach – Whitfield knows the values inherent in leadership and team building.

Basically, I am a connector. I really enjoy meeting people, learning about what they’re doing and figuring out how we can support them,” Whitfield shares. “I’ve been told I’m an inspirational leader and I like to believe that. What really motivates me is empowering my team, setting a common vision, and getting everyone excited about working together toward a common goal. »

The first task on Whitfield’s to-do list is modernizing the Chamber’s digital footprint on its website and social media platforms. This is part of an effort to reach beyond those who traditionally interact with the board – to cast the net across the entire economic ecosystem and beyond.

“I want to share the BBOT story with a wider audience,” Whitfield says. “We are a modern chamber of commerce with a diverse board of directors, and it is important that people see that we reflect the dynamic and diverse business community we serve. I want everyone to feel welcome and easily see who we are and how we are here to support them.”

As a result of these outreach efforts, Whitfield looks forward to a new strategic planning process that will begin in the new year. Similar to his approach to the board’s online presence, Whitfield wants to present the Burnaby Board of Trade as a 21st operation of the century aimed at the 21stst needs of businesses of the century.

“I want BBOT to reflect the modern business landscape, where every business, regardless of size, industry or age, knows they belong here,” Whitfield says. “We understand that today’s business owners face unique challenges, and it’s important for us to evolve, communicate better and provide solutions that truly meet their needs.
