The season and second year of Auburn football under head coach Hugh Freeze is not going the way many people thought it would, and if many questions hadn’t already been raised about this program , still others are now being asked.

The Tigers are currently 3-6 on the year and 1-5 in the SEC. As if that wasn’t enough, Freeze has a 9-13 record during his tenure at Auburn, similar to that of Bryan Harsin in his second season on the Plains.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the team, however, is the quarterback’s play on the field. While Payton Thorne has shown flashes of talent at times this season, his play throughout his career with the Tigers has had many people shaking their heads.

In two years, Thorne recorded a 62% pass completion percentage, throwing 29 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He was benched during the team’s Week 2 loss to Cal after throwing four interceptions for backup Hank Brown, before returning to the starting job against Oklahoma.

Although this season is Thorne’s last of eligibility, Freeze said his team is considering a position change during the SEC coaches’ teleconference Wednesday.

“Payton played pretty solid, but at the same time you start to see the big picture and it’s a tough dilemma for you as a coach,” Freeze said. “When you start to look at the big picture, as opposed to one of your players who hasn’t really done anything wrong, but we’re definitely not winning. So we’re debating all of that this week and we’ll continue next time . week, I debate it.”

Outside of Brown, Walker White has worked with the scout team for most of the year, but is also in line to earn playing time here at the end of the season.
