National Geographic’s ‘Endurance’ tells the story of two historic Antarctic expeditions

LOS ANGELES– National Geographic’s documentary “Endurance” tells the incredible true story of how Sir Ernest Shackleton kept his crew of 27 alive after their ship, the Endurance, sank in the frigid ice of Antarctica in 1915.

Now, more than a century later, a team of modern explorers, called Endurance22, has set out to find it.

“Endurance” presents one of the greatest survival stories of all time, told by Oscar-winning “Free Solo” directors Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin.

“The story of Shackleton is a beautiful story of endurance and a beautiful story of camaraderie,” Vasarhelyi said on the red carpet.

Initially, Shackleton and his crew embarked on an expedition across Antarctica, but the journey ended in disaster when the ship became stuck in the ice.

“From that point on, he was focused on getting these men home,” said an Endurance22 member of Shackleton.

“To keep morale up to facilitate their survival… It was really this very special leadership quality that he had, like loyalty to his men,” Vasarhelyi said.

“Endurance” tells the story of two landmark expeditions, one to lose the ship and the other to find it.

Vasarhelyi provided insight into what has kept the Endurance22 team so determined after their many challenges. “In the 2022 expedition, it’s the world’s best scientists doing what they’re most passionate about and there’s an inherent optimism in that.”

“Endurance” is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of National Geographic, Disney+, Hulu and ABC.
