Electoral overload? How to Block and Repeat Social Feed Content

play

While the the elections may be overreactions and discussions about politics may still be taking over your social media feed. It can be a bit overwhelming and intense at times, especially if you’re just looking for an escape. It’s OK to need a break.

Even on a normal day outside of election time, you may want to clean up your virtual world.

Here are some quick and easy ways to effectively make your Facebook, X and Instagram feeds less chaotic and hopefully a little more sustainable for your mental health.

Take a temporary break with mute

Instead of permanently unfollowing people and dealing with the possible drama that might come with it, you can simply take a break from viewing their content temporarily. Then, when you’re ready, it’s easy to add it back to your feed too.

On Instagram:

  • Navigate to the account you want to deactivate.
  • Click next, then mute
  • Choose which items you want to disable (posts, stories, notes, reels, etc.)
  • You’ll know you’ve successfully deactivated the account when you see the toggle next to the option move to the right.
  • When you’re ready, follow these steps to reactivate the account later.

On X (formerly Twitter):

  • Go to the profile of the person you want to deactivate
  • Select the three points at the top right of the profile
  • Select mute
  • Select “yes, I’m sure” if prompted.

On Facebook, don’t be afraid to press “snooze”

Facebook now offers a 30-day snooze option right in your News Feed. So, if you’re tired of a certain account, you can take a temporary break.

  • In your News Feed, on one of the person’s posts you want to put on hold, tap the three dots.
  • Click “repeat for 30 days”
  • This gives you a month’s break from the person and their content. After this time, they will automatically be “unput on hold” and you can decide to put them on hold again or invite them back to your feed.

Unfollow/Block

All social networks have the ability to block or unfollow someone. Here’s how to do it:

  • Access the desired profile
  • Click next
  • Click unfollow
  • If you want to block: click on the three dots on the profile and select block.

But be aware that blocking means different things depending on the platform. For some, this means that the blocked person cannot see or interact with any content you post. But for others, like X, even if a blocked person can’t interact with your content, they can still see what you post.

Think about finding your happy place

Besides keeping up with the news and your friends and family, make sure you have accounts in your feeds that are just for fun. Maybe he’s an influencer, a pastry lizardA fascinating lobster fisherman or a subreddit dedicated to corgis. Mixing this content into your feed can remind you to breathe (and even smile) when you might otherwise be caught in a doom scroll.
