Indian consulate in Canada cancels consular camps due to ‘insufficient security’

India’s Consulate General in Toronto announced Thursday that it was canceling some of the planned consular camps after Canadian security authorities expressed their inability to provide minimal security protection to its organizers.

“In view of the inability of security agencies to provide minimum security protection to the organizers of the community camps, the consulate has decided to cancel some of the planned consular camps,” the Consulate General of India said in a message on X.

The announcement comes just days after protesters waving Khalistan flags disrupted a consular event co-hosted by the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton and the Indian consulate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA), reacting to the development, said the consular camp is useful for the community as it facilitates documentation for the diaspora in areas such as maintenance of pensions and other similar activities.

The MEA said the Consulate General would proceed to set up consular camps wherever community organizations feel comfortable.

“You would have seen the post from our consulate in Toronto that they had to cancel the consular camp they were planning to hold over the weekend because they did not get adequate security or security assurance from the government. We have a large diaspora. “In Canada, many of these people, especially around the months of November and December, need several documents to continue receiving their pension and several other activities here in India.” MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during the weekly press briefing on Thursday.

“The consular camp that we organize is useful to the community, both to people of Indian nationality and to people of Indian origin who are now Canadian citizens. I understand that in other regions of Canada, in Vancouver for example, consular camps will be These consular camps are organized at the request of community organizations. So, where community organizing is comfortable, we will proceed with these consular camps,” he added.

Jaiswal’s statement comes after a protest took place at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton on Sunday and unverified videos circulating on social media appeared to show protesters holding banners in support of Khalistan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada, saying acts of violence would never weaken India’s resolve.

Prime Minister Modi said he was appalled by the cowardly attempts to intimidate Indian diplomats and called on the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law.

“I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence never weaken India’s resolve. We expect this May the Canadian government ensure justice and uphold the rule of law,” Prime Minister Modi said in a message on X.

The demonstrators clashed with the population and disrupted the consular demonstration. The incident was condemned by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely.
