Amarillo Railway Museum Receives Grant to Renovate Pantex ‘White Train’

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Railroad Museum has received a $36,000 grant from the Texas Historical Commission for the renovation of the Pantex “White Train” on display at the museum.

The train was donated to the Amarillo Railway Museum by the Department of Energy and Pantex and is currently on display at the museum.

The grant will be used to renovate the roofs of six nuclear weapons transport cars on the train.

The $36,000 grant will be matched by the museum for a total amount of $72,000 for the renovations.

The Amarillo Railway Museum considers this the first step in a long-term project to restore the White Train to its original condition, as it is considered a historic artifact in and across Amarillo the United States.

The museum also hopes to develop an interactive exhibit featuring the history of nuclear weapons transportation by rail, including positive and negative arguments regarding the mode of transportation.
