New York Knicks’ loss in Atlanta ends epic streak

One aspect of the New York Knicks’ epic luck with a former Toronto Raptor in the lineup is officially off.

Knicks lose 121-116 to Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night not only created its first losing streak of the season, but also its first dour double since OG Anunoby joined the metropolitan program at the end of December. Before Wednesday, as well as Monday’s loss to the Houston Rockets, the Knicks (3-4) had never lost consecutive games in which Anunoby played.

Anunoby’s arrival in a December trade led to an improvement in the Knicks’ fortunes: New York was 17-15 when he entered the lineup on New Year’s Day, but won its first five matches when he took to the metropolitan hard court. The Knicks won 12 of 14 total games before Anunoby succumbed to an elbow injury, but they won all but one of the nine regular-season games he played in his return.

All of this and more gave the Knicks the momentum to not only win 50 games, but secure the No. 2 playoff seed in the Eastern Conference, winning both landmarks for the first time since 2013 .

Unfortunately for the Knicks, further medical issues during the playoffs relegated Anunoby to part-time player status: although the Knicks, once again, did not lose a successive pair while he was in the lineup, they nevertheless fell in seven games against the Indiana Pacers in the lineup. Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Despite his absences, Anunoby was rewarded for his instant impact on the Knicks, who gave him a five-year, $212.5 million, fully guaranteed contract.

During his time in Manhattan and Toronto, Anunoby established himself as one of the most reliable two-way stars in the modern game. In seven appearances this season, he is averaging 14.4 points and 4.3 rebounds.

Anunoby will have the chance to start a new streak Friday night when the Knicks take on the Milwaukee Bucks (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG).
