City announces plans to expand I-95 and open a Bu-Cee’s in Hardeeville

HARDEEVILLE, SC (WTOC) – At Thursday night’s City Council meeting, officials announced an important development: a new Buc-ee’s Travel Center is expected to come to the Hardeeville area.

The popular beaver mascot, “Bu-cee,” is heading to Hardeeville!

“We are in the early stages of building a travel center that will feature the elite Buc-ee’s logo,” said Harry Williams, Mayor of the Town of Hardeeville.

“At the junction of Highways 278 and 17 and it’s bordered on one side by I-95,” Williams said.

This is an area where, according to residents, traffic is often heavy.

One of those residents emailed the council and at Thursday night’s meeting those concerns were read by council member Valarie Guzman.

“With this potential development plan and the potential of the travel center, I have serious concerns about the concentration of automobile traffic and the traffic that is about to reach the 278, 17 area,” Guzman said.

The mayor also addressed that concern by saying the plan for Buc-ee’s is part of his master plan that includes expanding I-95 and changing a nearby exit.

“SCDOT will begin expanding in the spring of 2025,” Williams said. “The first phase of the plan is to go from the state border to mile nine, just past exit eight.”

The overall project is expected to take approximately three years, with Buc-ee’s construction timed to align with these developments.

“And at the same time, Buc-ee’s will plan its construction so that the widening, the changes to exit eight and the opening of Buc-ee’s will cut three ribbons on that day,” Mayor Williams said.

Mayor Williams expressed his excitement for the new opportunities and jobs the project will bring to the area.
