Singapore’s Changi Airport to charge passengers more, airlines to fund more for $2.3 billion upgrade

SingaporeChangi Airport will charge passengers and airlines more for flights to and from the city-state to help fund a S$3 billion (2.3 billion) upgrade of its terminals billion US dollars).

The operator of one of Asia’s most popular airports said in a statement on Thursday that the increase in charges, between 2025 and 2030, would help cover the cost of growing demand for air travel while allowing the airport to remain competitive.

“As a major aviation hub for the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, Changi Airport is well-positioned to meet this increase in demand and provide better connectivity for travelers,” he said . “The aviation sector will continue to be a key driver of Singapore’s economic growth and provide more and better jobs for Singaporeans.”

Most of the money will be spent on upgrading baggage handling systems, expanding check-in desks, improving airside infrastructure and also funding some larger facility renovations, such as Terminal 3, which will be 20 years old by 2030.

Passenger service and security fees for people departing from Singapore currently cost S$46.40 per flight, which is incorporated into the ticket price. By April 2030, this amount will rise to S$58.40, an increase of 26 per cent. There will also be a one-time increase in air tax from S$8 to S$10 in 2027.

The fee for transit passengers currently stands at S$6 and will gradually increase to S$18 by 2030.
