Paul Scholes predicts how long before Ruben Amorim fights for Premier League title with Man Utd, he has ‘big worry’

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has dropped his first verdict on when Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim is likely to challenge for the Premier League title.

Paul Scholes was part of the last Manchester United team will win Premier League trophy under former manager Mr Alex Ferguson during the 2012-2013 campaign.

Mr Alex Ferguson, who retired from management in 2013engineered United’s 13 Premier League victories during his legendary reign at Old Trafford.

However, United struggled following Ferguson’s retirement and have failed to reassert their dominance of English football since 2013.

Former United managers Ole Gunnar Solskjaer And Jose Mourinho achieved the club’s best league result – second place each time – since the Ferguson era.

Scholes on Premier League title prediction

Ruben Amorim will officially become manager of Manchester United on November 11 and will succeed Erik Ten Hag in the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s reign at the Premier League club ended last week after the dismissal of the former Ajax boss following United’s poor start to the season.

Ruud van Nistelrooywho was assistant manager to Erik ten Hag, was appointed caretaker manager at United midway through the club discussions with Amorim of Sporting CP.

United suffered their worst result of the Premier League era under Ten Hag last season, with the Red Devils only managing an eighth-place finish.

The Red Devils are 13th in the table for the current campaign and United are six points outside the top four in the Premier League.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Paul Scholes claimed it could take up to four years for United to be in the Premier League title picture under Amorim.

“The big concern for me is how to get this team to challenge for the Champions League places when that should be the minimum,” he said.

“And then, I don’t know how much time he will need to take the next step again, to fight for the championship title. You’re looking at three and a half or four years to get anywhere near that.

“He comes in a situation where they are 14th in the league, and 20th in the Europa League, so he comes at a very bad time.”

Scholes on Man Utd and the Champions League

United paid £9.25m release clause in Amorim’s contract and the 39-year-old Portuguese coach has agreed a contract until June 2027 with the club.

The Red Devils have the option to extend Amorim’s contract by another year, with the Sporting CP boss facing a tough task ahead of him at Old Trafford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim managerial tenure will end at the club on Sunday following the Premier League clash against Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Scholes insisted United had fought for a Champions League place under previous managers, even though they failed to win the Premier League title.

“Some of the greatest managers you expected – the Van Gaals, the Mourinhos – didn’t really work for them,” he continued.

“But their level was even higher, they were still aiming for Champions League places, not quite the league.

“And I think it’ll be pretty easy for him to get this team of five or six moving forward.

“They finished eighth last year, it was a bad year so he doesn’t have a lot of work to do to beat that, but I think he’s more than capable of doing it.”
