Metropolitan Council approves grant to speed up rape kits

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Metropolitan Council approved a resolution accepting a grant to process rape kits more quickly.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s DNA Capacity Enhancement Backlog Reduction (CEBR) grant will award $250,000 to help fund the outsourcing of sexual assault kits to private providers.

A statewide delay was highlighted two years ago when Eliza Fletcher was attacked and killed in Memphis.

Since then, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has ramped up testing and outsourcing.

This process would also allow files to be closed more quickly.
