Diamondbacks listed as possible free agents for Rangers playoff hero

The Arizona Diamondbacks narrowly missed the playoffs in 2024 despite improving from 84 wins in 2023 to 89 wins. On the final day of the regular season, the final two National League Wild Card spots were clinched by the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets.

This offseason, Arizona will look to take a few steps in order to stay competitive and get back to the playoffs in 2025. They could use some help with their starting rotation.

Athletics listed Arizona as a potential landing spot for right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, who was a teammate of current D-Backs pitcher Jordan Montgomery with the Texas Rangers in 2023.

“Contenders who need a veteran presence, but not necessarily 180-plus innings, might view Eovaldi as a mid-rotation presence whose big-game experience will loom large in October. His track record in playoff run is impeccable, and Eovaldi has already won championships with the Red Sox and Rangers.

Eovaldi won the deciding games of the ALDS and World Series last fall. Injuries have concerned him the last two seasons, but when healthy he can be one of the best arms in the game.

The 34-year-old has won 12 games in 29 starts this year and posted a 3.80 ERA.

He won’t be cheap, but he will be more affordable for small market D-Backs than some of the other top pitchers on the market such as Corbin Burnes, Max Fried and Blake Snell.

We’ll see if Arizona comes to call on his services.
