The northeastern United States is experiencing persistent drought, which is helping to fuel an increase in fire risk. For Friday, a high fire weather outlook was released by the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center for the area from Massachusetts to the northern boundary of Virginia and West Virginia.

The threat from this high fire danger is due to winds gusting up to 10-15 mph, with gusts over 25-35 mph. Relative humidity levels also reach 20% in some places. Red flag warnings were issued Friday evening in parts of the Northeast and New England.

For Maryland, 53% of the state is now facing a severe drought. with 4% in EXTREME drought. Baltimore saw its last measurable rain on October 1 of 0.35 inches. Baltimore receives an average of 38.94 inches of precipitation per year and has only received 31.71 inches so far this year.

For New Jersey, 76% of the state is now in severe drought and the situation worsened to EXTREME drought in almost 20% of the southeastern part of the state. Newark Liberty International Airport saw its last measurable precipitation on September 29, 0.39 inches. Newark receives an average of 39.88 inches of rain per year and has received 34.82 so far this year.

For New York, 85% of the state is ABNORMALLY DRY while 26% of the state is now in MODERATE drought. Central Park, New York, received its last measurable rainfall on September 29, with 0.78 inches (technically it received 0.01 inches on October 29, but it wasn’t as significant). Central Park normally sees an average annual precipitation of 42.38 inches and has received 38.49 inches so far this year.

For Connecticut, 100% of the state is now in MODERATE droughtcompared to just 14% of the state at that level last week. New Haven saw its last measurable rainfall on October 7, of 0.27 inches (technically it received 0.01 inches on November 1, but that wasn’t incredibly significant either). Hartford, which receives an average of 40.25 inches of precipitation per year, has received 39.29 so far this year.

For Massachusetts, 84% of the state is in MODERATE drought while 32% are in SEVERE drought. Boston received its last measurable precipitation on October 30, 0.18 inches. Boston’s average annual precipitation accumulation is 36.46 inches and the city has received 36.38 so far this year.

Dry conditions are not expected to last much longer in the Northeast, as the next chance of rain could occur as early as Sunday evening.
