5 tips for preparing for finals | Student Affairs Division

The finals will be here before you know it! It’s never too early to get organized, make a plan, and make sure you’re on track to successfully complete the semester.

1. Review your documents

This is a great time to review your syllabus for each course and take note of any remaining tests, final projects, and key concepts that might be important for your final exams. Attend office hours with your professors is a great way to ask questions, clarify your expectations, and ensure you’re set up for success.

2. Know that you can ask for help

The end of the semester can sometimes be overwhelming, especially when you factor in work, activities, relationships, and other commitments on top of your academic course load. There are many academic and non-academic resources available to students to help you feel better in and out of class.

3. Establish a Schedule to Stay on Top of Your Assignments

It can be tempting to procrastinate when your assignments start to pile up. Instead, try to make a daily schedule of what you will study or what projects you will progress on, and when. Breaking your work into smaller chunks can make the workload more manageable. Schedule breaks and make time for non-academic activities that you also enjoy. Learn to manage your time can help you now and in the long term.

4. Prioritize self-care

Your body needs adequate sleep, good nutrition, and more to function at its best. Try to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night and eat nutritious meals to get the most out of your study efforts. Take care of yourself by making well-being a priority, including in your relationships and connecting with friends, family, and others.

5. Take breaks and have fun!

Final exams are important, but they don’t have to take over your life. It’s good to continue spending time with friends, working out, go to events and always focus on academics. Decide how much time each week you can devote to non-academic activities and stick to that plan.
