Murray Sinclair Memorial in Winnipeg on Sunday

Murray Sinclair will be honored at a national memorial ceremony on Sunday.

He is the first indigenous leader to be honored during the ceremony organized to honor “prominent Canadians, members of the royal family or citizens of another country who have had an impact on Canada,” according to the Heritage website canadian.

Government officials, First Nations, Inuit and Métis leaders and Sinclair’s family will be in attendance with musical performances by Morgan Grace, William Prince, Fawn Wood and Aysanabee.

The public is also welcome.

The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at the Canada Life Center. CTV News Winnipeg is broadcasting the event live.

Sinclair, a former senator, judge and chair of the Residential School Truth and Reconciliation Commission, died Monday at the age of 73 in a Winnipeg hospital. He was the first Aboriginal judge appointed to Manitoba.

Several government representatives and indigenous leaders are expected.

During his career, he co-chaired the Manitoba Aboriginal Justice Inquiry, which sought to determine whether the justice system was failing Aboriginal people.

Sinclair served as senator from 2016 to 2021.

He chaired the Truth and Reconciliation program, which collected the stories of residential school survivors across Canada and included 94 calls to action.

A teepee and sacred fire remain on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly so people can pay their respects to Sinclair.

A memorial web page was set up by the federal government to learn more about Mr. Sinclair’s life and a online condolence book is available to be signed.
