Lucid Air Sapphire Beats Porsche Taycan Turbo GT in Most Powerful U-Drag Race Yet

These two electric sedans have more than 2,300 horsepower between them

Lucid Air Sapphire Beats Porsche Taycan Turbo GT in Most Powerful U-Drag Race Yet

  • Two of the fastest electric sedans in the world compete in this U-drag race.
  • The test combines a traditional drag race with a single turn and a sprint to the finish.
  • The winner hands down dominates both races.

One percent of them now have the choice between several ultra-fast electric sedans. Among them are the Lucid air Sapphire and the Porsche Taycan TurboGT. Now the two men face off in a U-drag race to see who is faster in this unique testing protocol.

As a reminder, this kind of racing is exactly what it sounds like. Cars compete in a traditional drag race before turning around at the big end and racing back toward the starting line. Essentially, the event tests acceleration, braking, cornering and how easy it is to reduce power after a corner.

The competitors combine to produce 2,326 horsepower (1,734 kW), so there’s no doubt this will be a fast event. The Lucid has all the numbers on its side. It develops 1,234 hp (920 kW) and 1,430 lb-ft (1,936 Nm) of torque. The Porsche brings 1,092 hp (814 kW) and 988 lb-ft (1,338 Nm), but only when the driver uses the “Boost” button. Additionally, the Porsche reduces this power with two motors while the Lucid uses three.

If things seem a little lopsided on paper, the song only makes that truth more obvious. From the moment the flag falls during the first race, the Lucid rush forward and leave the Porsche for dead. The pair actually end up entering the corner at similar times, but the Air Sapphire is so much smoother on exit that the Taycan never comes close to catching it.

In the second race, the results are similar but the course is different. This time the Porsche leaps ahead and the Lucid spends the entire quarter mile bringing it back. Then, in the corner, the Air Sapphire is, once again, smoother. While the Porsche struggles to exit the corner without loss of traction, the Lucid leaves the area.

Interestingly, the Taycan was quicker from 0 to 60 mph (2.1 seconds) in the second run than the Lucid (2.2 seconds) in either run. The Lucid is powerful enough to win at the end of the drag strip with a performance of 9.2 seconds. The Air also cornered slightly harder at 1.34 g versus 1.33 g for the Porsche. In the end, he was a second faster throughout the test. This is a truly impressive feat considering how fast the Porsche is.
