Trump peace plan rules out deployment of US troops in buffer zone – The Telegraph

Donald Trump’s team rejects the possibility of deploying American troops in a 1,200 kilometer buffer zone between the Russian and Ukrainian armies envisaged by a project to freeze the war between the two countries.

Details: Details of the plan emerged after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that any attempt to achieve peace by appeasing Russia would be “suicidal” for Europe.

The plan is one of several options Trump is considering. Before his election, Trump said he would begin peace talks before taking office in January.

The plan, presented by three Trump staffers, suggests that the the current front line would be frozen and Ukraine would agree to postpone its NATO aspirations for 20 years.

In exchange, the United States would provide Ukraine with enough weapons to deter Russia from resuming hostilities.

However, the United States would not deploy troops to patrol or secure the buffer zone, nor would it fund this operation.

Quote from a member of Trump’s team: “We can provide training and other support, but the barrel of the weapon will be European.”

“We are not sending American men and women to keep the peace in Ukraine. And we are not paying for it. Ask the Poles, the Germans, the British and the French to do it.”

Background:

  • On November 8, former British Chancellor George Osborne said it would be unrealistic for the United Kingdom to continue supporting Ukraine without US support under President Trump.

  • Trump himself has never clarified the specific terms of the peace deal he envisions to end the war.

  • While congratulating Trump on his victory, Zelensky expressed his appreciation for Trump’s commitment to a “peace through strength” approach, saying it could help bring about a just peace in Ukraine.

  • After the summit of the European Political Community, Zelensky said he believes Trump wants a quick end to the war, but that this could mean sacrifices for Ukraine.
