Starbucks 2024 Holiday Cups Now Available

The holidays officially begin this week — at least at Starbucks — when the coffee chain launches its annual seasonal cups.

Starting Thursday, customers at its U.S. locations will have their hot drinks served in one of four types of festive cups featuring “familiar shades of Starbucks green and cranberry red paired with soft fondant-inspired pastels,” according to a press release.

Green is the focus of this year’s design, and Starbucks creative director Kristy Cameron said in the release that the jade hue “references our brand colors in a way that brings a spark of joy to our cups Christmas this season.

These cups have become a tradition for the coffee chain and inspire enthusiasm among its loyal customers. This tradition has also led to increased revenue in the past, which the channel desperately needs.

Last week, Starbucks reported a third straight quarter of declining sales and fewer customer visits: global sales at stores open at least a year fell 7 percent last quarter and the number of customer transactions fell 8 percent.

Each of the four mugs has a unique name and theme. The “joyful connection” design features circular shapes “combining to form a pattern that honors the art of coffee roasting,” with the design based on the roasters seen at Starbucks’ reserve roasting locations.

The “lyrical landscape” cup features bands of alternating lines that resemble gift wrapping, and the “mermaid chorus” is loosely based on the silhouette of Starbucks’ Siren logo. The “warm wishes” design features interconnecting circles that evoke “bright Christmas lights and moments of enjoying coffee together.”

All of the cups have “small badges on the back of the cups allowing baristas to write a message,” according to the press release. CEO Brian Niccol recently said he wanted to bring back names handwritten in Sharpies as part of the channel’s return to a “human touch.”

The frozen drink cups also get a new design with festive charms printed in white on the plastic. Cold drinks account for about 75 percent of Starbucks’ sales.

Starbucks’ holiday menu is also getting some new items, including a “Cran-merry” orange drink as part of the chain’s popular Refresher line of non-coffee drinks, a turkey-sage Danish, a snowman cake pop and a penguin-shaped cookie.

Starbucks first introduced seasonal cups in 1997. The company sparked controversy in 2015 when it removed “seasonal symbols,” meaning images of reindeer and ornaments , and opted for a simple two-tone red cup. Since then, he has added more festive flourishes, like ornaments and mistletoe, to its cups.
