Dear Abby: If you are on a sidewalk, walkers must follow the “rules of the road.”

DEAR ABBY: I’m a walker and I would like to know if there is a rule about passing a walker coming in the opposite direction? I tend to stay to the right as if I were driving a car, but some walkers seem to insist on staying to the left.

Also a message to your readers: Sidewalks are for PEDESTRIANS only, so please do not park your vehicles, lawn mowers, lawn equipment, home maintenance/repair equipment, etc. there. While it’s easy for me to get around them, it’s not easy for small children on bikes or people using a wheelchair or stroller. — WALK IN FLORIDA

DEAR WALK: The etiquette for pedestrians is the same as for drivers in all 50 states: stay on the right side of the “road.” In addition, people riding scooters or bicycles on the sidewalk pose a danger to pedestrians. In many communities, there may be ordinances discouraging the parking of equipment on sidewalks. If the agreement is semi-permanent, visit your town hall website to determine which department the violation(s) should be reported to.
