Netflix quietly adds ‘slow burn and intense’ film starring British cinema legends

Netflix viewers I can now watch a film featuring a series of Legends of British cinema which fans called “suspenseful, unpredictable and subtle.”

The Sense of an Ending is a mystery drama based on the Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name by Julian Barnes.

Released in 2017, it starred Jim BroadbentCharlotte Rampling, Harriet Walter, Billy Howle, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Dockery, Matthew Goode and Joe Alwyn.

The film is told through the memories of Tony Webster (played by Jim) and his friends, “exploring the imperfection and selectivity of memory, as well as the different memories of past events, depending on the observer and time elapsed since the event.

Tony, an elderly divorcee, runs a camera store in London but one day he receives a letter from the estate of Sarah Ford, the mother of his 1960s college girlfriend Veronica.

To his surprise, she left him £500 and a diary, which is still with Veronica, and he then makes efforts to find her, with old events coming to the fore.

Praising the film on Rotten Tomatoes, fan Kevin wrote: “Well written, well acted, suspenseful, unpredictable and subtle.”

“It’s a slow-burning drama about grief, loss and introspection. I found it quite a captivating and thoughtful watch,” Isla shared.

Meanwhile, other viewers praised the “great casting” and Jim’s “power”, while others said the film “held my attention from start to finish” and was “moving and captivating”.

Speaking ahead of the film’s release, director Ritesh Batra said Town and country she first fell in love with the story while reading the book in 2011.
