Dear Abby: My walks are ruined by people who don’t follow the rules.

DEAR ABBY: I am a walker and I would like to know if there is a rule about passing an oncoming walker? I tend to stay to the right as if I were driving a car, but some walkers seem to insist on staying to the left.

Also a message to your readers: Sidewalks are for PEDESTRIANS only, so please do not park your vehicles, lawn mowers, lawn equipment, home maintenance/repair equipment, etc. there. While it’s easy for me to get around them, it’s not easy for small children on bikes or people using a wheelchair or stroller. — WALK IN FLORIDA

DEAR WALK: Etiquette for pedestrians is the same as etiquette for drivers in all 50 states: Stay on the right side of the “road.” In addition, people riding scooters or bicycles on the sidewalk pose a danger to pedestrians. In many communities, there may be ordinances discouraging the parking of equipment on sidewalks. If the agreement is semi-permanent, visit your town hall website to determine which department the violation(s) should be reported to.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Abby’s advice here is a little vague. In New York State, however, pedestrians must first use a sidewalk, if available. Then, if no sidewalk is available, walkers should walk facing oncoming traffic, i.e. on the left side of the road. Learn more, here. If an oncoming walker breaks these rules, use common sense to go around them, rather than arguing over who is on the right side in the middle of a busy road.
