Why are New York public and Catholic schools closed on Monday?

New York City public and Catholic school students will be able to enjoy a three-day weekend, as they have a day off on Monday due to a holiday.

According to the Department of Education (DOE) Academic Calendar and the Archdiocese of New York Elementary School Calendarschools are closed on Monday November 11 to observe Veterans Day.

This holiday is a day originally set aside to commemorate the end of World War I, but it is now the time when our nation pauses to honor all American veterans. Parades are held across the country, including New York, to honor all those who have served in all branches of the United States military.

DOE Public School Calendar includes around twenty days off between the first day and the last day of classes. The calendar provides for holidays for religious holidays, week-long breaks for winter holidays, mid-winter and spring holidays, as well as federal holidays.

For those looking further ahead, there are plenty of days off before the end of the year. Public school students have had a four-day week for the past two weeks and the following week.

After Veterans Day, the next holiday for students will be when schools are closed Nov. 28-29 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Additionally, the city recently announced another day off this year, as Monday, December 23 has been added as an additional winter vacation day for New York City public schools.

The extra day off during the holidays will give families more time to travel and vacation.

New York City public schools will now be closed for winter break from Monday, December 23 through Wednesday, January 1. The last day of classes before the holidays will be Friday, December 20.

Students will return to class on Thursday, January 2.

This means students will have 12 days off, including weekends, during winter break this year.

Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York also begin winter break on Monday, Dec. 23, although the break lasts longer than public schools. Students will not return to class until the following week, Monday January 6.

This represents a total of 16 days off, including weekends.
