After a franchise-first sweep among California teams, the Vancouver Canucks return home and kick off a 6-game homestand against the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton is fifth in the Pacific Division standings, ahead of Vancouver, although it’s the home team that is a slight -105 underdog in the NHL odds.

With the Oilers clearly in post-Stanley Cup hangover mode, my Oilers vs. Canucks predictions indicate that the home team will finally take that momentum back on the road at Rogers Arena.

Keep reading as I explain my NHL Pick for Saturday November 9.

My analysis of the Canucks

This is the first time these teams have met since Edmonton Oilers shipped on Vancouver Canucks in the second round of the playoffs last year.

But since an 0-1-2 start to the year, Vancouver has taken off, going 7-1-1 in its next nine games.

Much of that success has come from outside, however, where they have now won six in a row following a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

This victory came with bad news, as the goals leader Brock Boeser (upper body) took a hit in the first half and did not return. His status for Saturday is still unknown.

The loss of Boeser doesn’t help as Vancouver attempts to turn around its home game, where it has just one win in five starts, allowing 4.4 goals per game, while only having 2.2.

Edmonton just overcame its biggest injury problem, as star Connor McDavid is back after suffering an ankle injury that sidelined him for three games.

He was useless in his return as the Oilers lost their second straight game in a 4-2 loss to Vegas.

Edmonton, which led for much of the contest, couldn’t land its plane, giving up the game-winning goal with less than a minute left in regulation.

Offensively, the Oilers are 31st in scoring, scoring just 2.36 goals per game. They will face a Vancouver team that ranks eighth in GAA with 2.92 per game.

This is a team that finished seventh in the regular season last year and has scored 86 playoff goals in 25 games, 13 ahead of the nearest team.

This pop gun offense doesn’t cover a defense that sits just outside the Top 10, allowing 3.21 goals per game. Edmonton has yet to win a game this year by scoring two or fewer goals, going 0-7-1.

Stuart Skinner had a rough start to the year for Edmonton, going 3-5-1 with a 3.28 GAA and .885 save percentage. He is 1-4 all-time against the Canucks, with a 4.04 GAA and .855 save percentage.

Vancouver swept last year’s four-game regular season series, three as moneyline underdogs.

They are in a prime position to avenge this playoff ouster, as the Oilers attempt to turn on the switch for this season.

Plus/Minus analysis of the Canucks and Oilers

  • The road team has won eight of the Canucks’ last nine games.
  • Edmonton has been a moneyline betting favorite in 12 games this year, going 5-7-0 in those games.
  • The Oilers have won the Under in four straight and nine of their last 10 games.
  • Vancouver’s Over record is 3-2-0 in five home games this season.
