North Bay News: Police confirm attempted murder case in Cobalt was domestic violence

Police say a 16-year-old boy was attacked with a sword on November 3 in Cobalt, Ontario, in a case of domestic violence.

The victim was seriously injured and remains in stable condition in an Ottawa hospital, the Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Saturday.

The suspect, aged 18, has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody.

Police responded around 6 p.m. to a collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Helen Street and Prospect Avenue.

“Investigation revealed that an 18-year-old male driving a sport utility vehicle struck a 16-year-old female who was walking along Helen Street,” police said.

“The man then exited the vehicle and attacked the victim with a sword. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, then airlifted by Ornge to an Ottawa hospital .”

“The quick response of local residents and witnesses to the incident stopped further attacks on the victim,” OPP added.

In addition to attempted murder, the 18-year-old Haileybury man is charged with aggravated assault, weapons possession and breaching a suspended sentence order.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Haileybury on November 12.

“The incident is being treated as a domestic violence case and therefore the name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim,” police said.
