Rockhampton horse gives city rivals hell

He is the Rockhampton rocket that is sent to Brisbane at every start and could soon target the state’s best sprinters in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes.

Hell – trained by a former rodeo Nick Walsh – is on a winning streak in Brisbane, gaining a cult following for his fast-paced running style.

Walsh used to ride broncos for a living and now Hell is taking him on a wild ride after his electric win at the Benchmark 78 (1200m) on Saturday.

Just as Tasmanian galloper Mystic Journey became famous for his ferry trips to Victoria to race each time, Hell is logging the miles – but in a float instead, seven hours each way from Rockhampton.

“Everyone loves it, it’s fun to bring it to town,” Walsh said.

“We’ll see what we do when we get him home, but we were thinking something like the George Moore at the end of the month.

“He was nominated for the Keith Noud on Saturday, but we wanted to let him fight his way here.

“Small fish are sometimes sweet, so we’ll look at the George Moore if all goes well.

“He was going back and forth with Rocky every time and I was going to leave him here with someone, but the boys told me not to change what’s not broken.

“So I guess we’ll be moving it up and down in the future as well.”

After five starts for Tony and Calvin McEvoy in Victoria, Hell arrived at Walsh Stables in Rockhampton as a maiden, which quickly changed.

Originally sold as a yearling for $290,000 at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling SaleHell has now won six of his eight starts for the trainer and is proving a bargain for connections.

“We put it online for $35,000, the One Syndications guys picked it up,” Walsh said.

I don’t know how we got it at that price.

“He’s not a very difficult horse to train, so we just keep him on the fresher side and win him every three or four weeks.

“I thought (jockey) Emily (Lang) might have gone a little slow into the turn, but if he’s ahead in the turn he’s still going to be hard to mow down.

“It was nice to be able to see him sprint at a nicer pace.”
