Accident with Boston Pizza in Fort McMurray leaves one dead, RCMP say

A woman is dead after a driver crashed into a truck at a Boston Pizza restaurant in Fort McMurray late Saturday morning.

RCMP said a Ford F350 crashed into the restaurant at Franklin Avenue and Richard Street around 11:30 a.m.

A 24-year-old woman working inside Boston Pizza was struck. She was taken to hospital, but died shortly after.

The driver, who was the only one in the truck, was arrested and charged.

The accident also caused significant structural damage to the building.

Investigators and occupational health and safety officials are expected to remain on scene overnight.

“The Alberta RCMP extends its sincere condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased. This is a profound loss of life for the family and the community as a whole,” the RCMP said in a press release.

No further details were yet available about the driver or the nature of the charges. RCMP have not said whether speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
