New Mississippi Freedom Trail marker honors Victoria Jackson Gray Adams

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – A Mississippi civil rights pioneer born in Hattiesburg has been honored by the Mississippi Humanities Council and Visit Mississippi.

Saturday morning, a Mississippi Freedom Trail marker was unveiled, honoring the late Victoria Jackson Gray Adams.

She was a founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and the first African American woman from Mississippi to run for United States Senator.

“She also worked for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which was Martin Luther King’s organization, and other organizations, like the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, to help bring about change, not only in Mississippi , but across the country,” said John Spann. , program/outreach director for the Mississippi Humanities Council.

Adams died in Baltimore, Maryland on August 12, 2006.
