Canadian police made another arrest on Saturday in connection with the pro-Khalistan attack on a Hindu temple in the Greater Toronto Area. Last week, violence broke out at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton following a visit by Indian officials. Pro-Khalistani protesters created havoc in the area that eventually spread to two other locations in Mississauga and continued into Monday.

In a press release released on Saturday, Peel Regional Police announced that they had arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with this case. Authorities said the man was carrying an assault weapon and would be in court soon. Global News reported.

Before that, authorities have already made four other arrests in this case. Among those arrested in the case was a 57-year-old man accused of publicly inciting hatred. Additionally, a Peel police officer was also suspended.

Police condemn violence

In Saturday’s statement, police noted that several demonstrations took place during the protests and many were filmed, including one where someone is seen using a loudspeaker to incite violence by calling people to storm the temple. Videos circulating on social media showed fights and people hitting each other with sticks inside the temple grounds.

“Additional offenses remain under investigation and we are confident more arrests will be made,” Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duralappah said in a statement. Global News reported. “Each incident witnessed violence and hatred. This is unacceptable and has no place in our communities,” he added. Authorities then urged residents to come forward with any information relating to the incident.

The clashes which took place outside the temple quickly turned violent, leaving one injured, who was then treated by emergency services. Recently, Canada has witnessed a significant rise in the pro-Khalistani movement, with many activists frequently vandalizing Hindu temples. This issue has also created a major divide between India and Canada’s diplomatic relations.
